What Causes A Burst Pipe?

Globally, many pipes burst in winter due to the expansion and contraction of frozen water. This affects the integrity of the pipe. Water pipes do have a limited lifespan as the materials used corrode over time.

Water pipes and the flow of water create pressure. When you turn on a tap – water runs. Without water pressure, water can not flow. If enough pressure builds up inside a pipe it can burst, especially at a joint.

• Incorrect pipework, layering of pipes, and poor re-enforcement of joints can cause pipes to burst
• Ground movement and weight can add too much pressure to a pipe (Earthquakes, heavy rains)
• Excessive water pressure (This can be caused by incorrect size pipes and fittings)
• Clogged Pipes – a buildup of materials stops the correct flow of water
• This creates too much pressure in the pipe, and it can burst
• Aged pipes may have lost their structural integrity
• Metal pipes can rust and corrode, and plastic pipes can become brittle

Signs That There is a Burst Water Pipe

If there is a burst pipe in an area where you can see it, while this is a problem, at least you can locate it easily. This is not always the case. There are some warning signs to look out for:

• Is your water bill skyrocketing?
• Is the water pressure unstable?
• Is the water cloudy, or does it have a brown tint? (Burst pipes can breed bacteria or contain rust)
• Is there a rotten egg smell? Leaking sewage from a burst pipe will give off natural gas
• Do you hear hissing in the taps, or gurgling in the drains?
• Do you have noisy pipes?

All these signs show that there is a problem with the plumbing system of your home. A burst pipe will affect the water pressure of your home and needs immediate attention.
