How it Works

When we install gas in your home, we have two options, depending on whether you have a gas main on your street or not.

With the first option, it's necessary that your home be connected to the gas main in your street. Here, a specialized team installs a gas inlet service line from the gas main in your street onto your property. This will typically be a team from a gas supply company.

We then connect the gas outlet service to your home so that you have gas available in your home that you can use for your appliances or for hot water. Between the gas main in the street and your home, a gas meter will be installed.

This gas meter serves two purposes. The first is that it safely regulates the gas flow between the gas main in the street and your home. It also allows accurate measurements of the volume of gas you use in your home. To get these measurements, the gas meter will be read at frequent intervals, and you'll be billed based on your gas usage for the specific period.

When an installer does a gas installation, the location of this gas meter is determined by a variety of factors one being that it should be easily accessible by the gas meter readers. So, when they plan your gas installation, they give due regard to where your gas meter should be.

If you don't have a gas main in your street, the other option is to do an LPG gas installation. This gas is also used for heating and cooking and comes in bottles that you’ll refill once they’re empty.

Typically, these bottles will be installed outside your home with the gas pipes leading into your home where you can use it for your appliances, hot water, or heating.

What’s the Difference Between a Plumber and a Gasfitter?

Now, the question is obviously, what's the difference between a plumber and a gas fitter. And we agree, this can get a bit confusing.

The main difference is that, while some plumbers offer gas fitting services, a qualified and licensed gas fitter can't offer any plumbing services.

In other words, apart from being an expert in drainage, sewage, and piping systems, a qualified and licensed plumber can provide some gas fitting services. These include pipe disconnection, pipe installation, pipe repair, and pipe fitting.

In contrast, a licensed gas fitter can repair, service, or replace natural gas appliances, cooktops, and upright cookers in both residential and commercial applications. As such, they receive specialized training to do all this.

During this training, a gas fitter will need to possess the necessary hands-on experience and theory-based learning to qualify for their license.

This means that they'll have to complete an apprenticeship under the supervision of a licensed gas fitter. In this way, practical experience will be combined with classroom-based theory that equips gas fitters with all the basic skills and knowledge they need to do their job properly.

A licensed gas fitter, is however, not entitled to do any plumbing work. This means, a gas fitter's duties are limited to installing gas pipes, installing LPG systems, installing pressure regulating systems, and appliance maintenance amongst others.

This problem is obviously solved and the question about the difference becomes irrelevant if you use a tradesperson is both a qualified plumber and gas fitter.

The key thing to remember, though, is that you should look for a gas fitter who is licensed. Unlicensed gas work is illegal. Apart from this, it's also unsafe.

So, using a licensed plumber or gas fitter means that their work is guaranteed and that it's going to be installed correctly and safely. This means it's important to do your homework and see whether your plumber or gas fitter is properly qualified to do the job.

How Do You Know if a Gas Fitter Is Licensed?

Although gas fitting license regulations differ from state to state, the simplest way to know if a gas fitter is licensed, is to ask them for their license card. If they have this card, it shows that they’ve undergone the right training and have the necessary skills to do your gas installation.

If you're still unsure whether a specific gas fitter is qualified, there are a few sources available online that you can use to check if the gas fitter is licensed. Most also have websites that you can visit and read up on their qualifications.

Apart from being licensed, it could also be helpful to read some online reviews to see the quality of service they offer. The key is that you should do the necessary research to find the right gas fitter for the job.

Fortunately, at Lucid Plumbing we’re professional and suitably qualified to attend to all your gas installation needs.

Very happy customer! I can't thank Ben, Fouad & Bradley enough for fixing an electrical fault (and dodgy wiring from times gone by) to make my home safer (as well as installing some additional points, tidying up some others and installing new interconnected smoke alarms).

Great experience, they actually turned up when they said they would. The guy took the time to look for leaks other than the obvious one, and found them. Saving us a return visit. Pricing is fair. Would definitely recommend.
