New, Or Repair your Electric Hot Water

Do you have a problem with your hot water supply? Is the water too hot, or lukewarm? Is there no hot water or weak pressure? There may be a problem with your electric geyser.

Lucid Plumbing has offices throughout Australia. We are here for all your home plumbing needs.

Electric geysers have a lifespan of between 10 and 15 years. If you have any problems with your hot water supply, you need to check your geyser. In the worst-case scenario, it might be that your geyser has burst.

Burst Geysers

Geysers are designed to heat up and store hot water. Inside the tank are a thermostat and an overflow pipe. When something goes wrong water pressure and temperatures go high, fast. This can be a serious problem. It must not be ignored. Any sign of a geyser problem needs immediate attention. What do you see?

  • Hot water flowing out the overflow in a controlled way
  • Hot pouring out the overflow (Gushing)

Over time parts of the thermostat can corrode, or the heating element may be damaged. In a similar way to a pot boiling over, a geyser can overheat, and water can start to pour out. Even if it is just a trickle, you need to have it checked as soon as possible.

Do I Need a New One?

No, not necessarily. It depends on what the problem is. It might be that the thermostat needs to be replaced but that the geyser is fine and still in good working order.

What Do I Do?

  • You need to switch off the main water supply
  • It should be near the water meter
  • Then you need to switch off your geyser on the main electrical board
  • If you cannot locate it, switch off the main power switch
  • Call a plumber right away

You can open all hot and cold water taps to drain water from the system and reduce pressure. Sometimes hot water can come from the cold taps too, so you can open both. The system is under too much pressure so hot water can come out of the cold-water taps.

This can help reduce potential water damage if your geyser is in your home.

Too Hot, Lukewarm, or Cold?

The thermostat of your geyser may need to be re-set. The temperature of the water is controlled by the thermostat. It could also be a faulty heating element. Some geysers have two heating elements – one at the bottom, and one at the top.

Heating elements can burn out. They can easily be replaced. It might be that one of your elements is not working.

The size of the geyser relative to the number of people in a household is also important.

If the unit is too small, there will not be an adequate supply of hot water for your family.

Very happy customer! I can't thank Ben, Fouad & Bradley enough for fixing an electrical fault (and dodgy wiring from times gone by) to make my home safer (as well as installing some additional points, tidying up some others and installing new interconnected smoke alarms).

Great experience, they actually turned up when they said they would. The guy took the time to look for leaks other than the obvious one, and found them. Saving us a return visit. Pricing is fair. Would definitely recommend.
