We'll Fix Your Water Pipe

Lucid Plumbing is here to help you with all your home and business plumbing needs. We have offices throughout Australia. Do you suspect that there is a hole in a water pipe?

Home DIY jobs, drilling, and other sharp objects can damage water pipes. Over time, some water pipes can develop pinholes that leak. If you suspect you have a hole in a pipe you need to get professional help.

What Causes Holes in Water Pipes?

What kind of pipes do you have in your home? Copper pipes are different grades, and they can develop exceedingly small holes. PVC pipes can also develop holes. What is the PH of the water? Is there a lot of chlorine in the water?

As water moves through the pipes, small pits can form in the pipes. This is due to minerals in the water that react with the metal. Old water geysers that are rusty deposit metal into the water. Over time, small holes can form.

There is also something called galvanic corrosion that can occur when copper contacts stainless steel.

The is also something called cavitation. Water moves at high speed under pressure in the pipes. When there are bends (90°) water spins and turns. The natural force of water can create a hole when pipes have not been fitted correctly. The continuous pressure at one point will affect the integrity of the pipe.

Water Velocity

Having excellent water pressure is great but there is a limit to the amount of pressure in a plumbing system. For hot and cold water pipes the velocity is different – plumbing codes and national relegations limit the amount of water that can flow.

You may have noticed that the hot and water tap flow rate is not the same. This is regulated by special valves in the system. (And the reason mixing a shower to the best temperature can be a challenge!)

If the flow rate and pressure are too great it can damage pipes. Newly constructed buildings also have regulations to limit the flow rate to conserve water. (500kPA)

Signs That You Have Pin Holes

Has your water bill increased? Having holes in pipes will affect the water pressure. It may not be as obvious as a big leak. You can :

  • Have you developed mold or mildew on any walls?
  • Is paint bubbling or cracking?
  • Are there water stains or any discoloration?
  • Copper pipes can look dimpled
  • Can you hear water dripping?

Check Your Water Meter

A good way to check if you have a water leak is to switch off all your taps and plumbed in appliances. (Dishwasher, washing machine.)Locate your water meter and see if it moves. There should be no movement at all.

No water should be flowing through your home’s water supply. If there is, this is a sign that there is a hole in a pipe. You will need to turn off the main water supply and get help immediately.

Very happy customer! I can't thank Ben, Fouad & Bradley enough for fixing an electrical fault (and dodgy wiring from times gone by) to make my home safer (as well as installing some additional points, tidying up some others and installing new interconnected smoke alarms).

Great experience, they actually turned up when they said they would. The guy took the time to look for leaks other than the obvious one, and found them. Saving us a return visit. Pricing is fair. Would definitely recommend.
