What Causes Leaks?

Do I Have a Leak?

The first thing you should do is check your water meter. Before reading the meter you will need to switch off all taps and plumbed in machines. ( Dishwasher, washing machine.)

• Locate the water meter on your property
• Check that it is not moving
• No numbers or dials should move, at all
• There should be no water moving through the system
• The meter should reflect no changes

If the meter is moving, and the dial is spinning or moving in any way – this shows water moving in the system. IF the dial is moving fast a large amount of water is moving and leaking. You need to act quickly.

Other Signs You Have a Leak

As you know when there are repairs done on burst pipes in the neighborhood, there are signs that can show you a drop in water pressure. These can also be present if there is a leak.

• Hissing sounds in the pipes show air in the system
• There may be a drop in water pressure
• Water can be dirty or smell bad
• Water running – you may hear water running in the pipes
• Clinking noises – there might be pebbles in the pipes
